From Blah to Beautiful "When we moved in, our yard looked like it had never been cared for. The grass was sparse and weeds had taken over," Stevens says. Stevens tried over-the-counter chemicals to take care of the weeds - they also killed his grass. He tried fertilizing - that helped some. With all his time and effort, his lawn still looked awful. That's when he asked his neighbor and friend for help.
Following Fenske's instructions - aerating the soil, adding gypsum (to get rid of spotting left by dog urine), and applying the right fertilizer in the correct fashion - Stevens says after only a few months he's on the right track to a lawn he and his family can be proud of. "I never knew anyone could micro-manage my lawn better than me, but Matt sure can," he says. "He wants to see results, checks in with me, and has experience that I can rely on." The Soil Building Challenge Begins "Dwayne explained that cover crops, or soil building crops, have the potential for fall grazing, reduce soil compaction, and build the soil organic matter," says Duxbury, who counts on his land to provide forage to his 500-head cow/calf herd. "This sounded like the perfect scenario because we graze everything and end up with compaction issues - I'm also intrigued by the idea of more feed this winter." Beck gave Duxbury a list of seed companies to work with for seed. Duxbury chose Millborn Seeds. He says he was impressed with their service from his first contact with them. "They stayed open late waiting for me so I could pick up the seed," says Duxbury, adding that the piece of land he planted the soil building on is a challenge - compacted and a light soil structure. "I'm totally utilizing their recommendations. Matt's been out here twice to check on the seed's progress." Duxbury planted turnips, radishes, lentils and millet. "Millborn Seeds is a solutions-focused company. Our team enjoys working directly with land-owners, like Duxbury, to ensure the long-term success of their grassland. Soil building crops is one of many ways to build up your grassland and get it working for you," Fenske says. He adds that soil building crops are very beneficial to the land when they are used correctly. "Soil building crops should be prescribed - basically once we know the problem, understand your end-use goal, your soil type and growing environment, we can prescribe the right soil building crop to solve the issue," Fenske says. To learn more about how soil building crops can make your land work for you, contact us. What's next? We'll be tracking the progress of a soil building project we are working on with Wessington Springs, S.D., rancher Dale Duxbury for the next few issues.
