![]() CREP & Millborn Seeds Stand Establishment Guarantee To stem the tide of habitat loss in South Dakota, the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks recently joined forces with Farm Service Agency to increase Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) payments.
Murano says if a landowner's land qualifies for the new Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), the 40 percent increase over Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) payments is a competitive option. "In most cases there are no out of pocket expenses for landowners and the rental rates approach or exceed cash rent. CREP is a great deal if you have marginal crop land or have an interest in wildlife habitat," Murano says. "Bottom line - this is the best deal that you'll ever get for CRP land in South Dakota. If you're waiting for a better deal - this is the better deal." Land on the James River Watershed that currently qualifies for CRP, qualifies for CREP. Murano says the contract terms of CREP are similar to CRP terms with one addition - the landowner allows for public access. By joining forces with the South Dakota GF&P, the additional dollars for CREP are funded by fees collected for hunting licenses - increasing the cost-share on most projects to 100 percent. "For example, if a normal CRP cost share is 50 percent, with CREP it's 100 percent. If a normal CRP rental payment is $100 an acre, with CREP it's $140 an acre," Murano says. The CREP program is available to the first 100,000 qualifying acres. This could put a strain on seed supplies; I encourage landowners to sign up soon so they don't have to wait for their seed. If you have any questions on CREP contact Rocco Murano at 605-353-7185 or rocco.murano@state.sd.us . To see if your land is on the James River Watershed, visit www.sdgfp.info. Only the Best Will Do Spend much time around me, Matt, Ben or Jason and I'm sure you've heard us say that since you can't control Mother Nature, seed is one of the six things you can control when it comes to achieving project success - whether it's a golf course, wildlife habitat, a city park, DOT project or football field. To ensure that we provide you with the highest quality seed and product, Millborn Seeds invests heavily in quality assurance and testing. We start by working with trustworthy growers. Upon receiving seed at our facility, we resample each lot and send it to the best grass seed lab in the industry - NST Labs, Bridgewater, S.D. Like us, NST labs focuses on grass seed and native grasses. As one of about 150 registered seed technologists in the nation, Stahl got his start in the seed testing world working for one of the largest seed testing labs in the country. Growing up on a farm near Bridgewater he wanted to return to his family farm and decided to open his own seed testing lab so he could pursue both of his interests. "My love for agriculture and interest in seed testing allows me to provide quality assurance for the grass and native seed industries while also farming," he says. He says Millborn Seeds' quality assurance program is unique. "They are 100 percent focused on quality assurance. Even though all the seed that comes into their facility has been tested, they test it again and then send it to me for more extensive testing and a certificate of analysis. They even send seed to me to test that their supplier has already had me test," Stahl says. "They want to provide their customers with the best information possible." If you have any questions on Millborn Seeds' quality assurance program or how you can achieve a successful project, give me a call, 605-697-6306. |
