Keep Your Tree Belt Healthy and Attract Wildlife with our Deluxe Wildlife Tree Belt Seed Mixby Jason Tronbak, Conservation Specialist

For most South Dakota landowners getting trees to grow and thrive can be a challenge in the beginning. Invest in the long-term success of your tree stand by planting a Millborn Tree Belt Seed Mix.

Planting the correct mix of grass species in your tree belt prevents erosion and keeps aggressive weeds from stealing water and nutrients from the trees.

Tree Belt Seed Mix Options
Selecting the seed mix that will meet your expectations depends on where your tree stand is located and your objectives for your tree belt.

If you planted your tree belt to provide wildlife cover and promote wildlife habitat, then I'd encourage you to go with our Deluxe Wildlife Tree Belt Seed Mix that has a variety of short, native, warm season grasses. With grasses like little bluestem, sideoats grama, blue grama and buffalograss, this mix is most beneficial to wildlife and does not compete with the trees for water or nutrients.

However, if your tree belt is part of your landscape and you plan to mow, then we suggest our Fairgrounds Mix. This durable, drought tolerant mix establishes quickly and does not require a lot of maintenance. Again, it will keep weeds at bay, while not competing with your trees for water or nutrients.

If you have any questions on the Tree Belt mix that is right for you, please give me a call, 880-498-7333 or send me an e-mail, jasont@millbornseeds.com.

Millborn Introduces a New Food Plot Mix
By Jason Tronbak, Conservation Specialist

If you're not familiar with the term Brassica, don't worry, you're not alone!

Brassica is the term that encompasses the families of mustards, cabbages, turnips, kale and a few other plant species.

Brassica's provide excellent foodplots for deer. The plants are very high in protein (15%-25%), an excellent source of energy, drought tolerant, and stay green long after the first hard frost. Deer eat their green foliage and then dig up the roots - I've actually seen deer dig through the snow and dig them up to eat in the winter. (Landowner Dave Grevlos shot this monster 170", 4 x4 using our new food plot mix.)

The Millborn Brassica Mix is a great foodplot mixture. Coupled with corn, it will carry deer through a tough winter like this one. I suggest that landowners interseed the Brassica Mix into corn when it's about a foot tall.

We Take the Time to Understand our Client's Needs
By Matt Fenske, Vice President of Business Development

"It's been said that green spaces are the lungs of the community. Wetlands also play an important role; I say they are the kidneys and liver of our waterways," says Paul Clinton, landscape architect for Dakota Land Surveying and Engineering, Inc.

Wetlands are a large focus of Paul's work. He and his firm work with developers who have impacted wetlands to mitigate or replace. Designing a wetland requires research, time, and diverse plant species.

"There's a lot of satisfaction in creating a wetland and seeing it grow and start to develop," he says. Paul and the team at Dakota Land Surveying and Engineering count on Millborn Seeds to provide information on the plant species needed for each project.

"Matt and Jason help us by letting us know what species are available and the current cost," Paul says. "There are not a lot of native seed growers out there. Native seeds are never available in the same quantities or price from one year to the next - it's not like Kentucky bluegrass where there are plenty of growers. We utilize their expertise and knowledge of the species and chemical tolerance and adjust our seed mixes depending on the information we receive from them."

At Millborn Seeds, we are most concerned about doing things the right way. One way we feel we can best serve our customers is by getting to know them and understand their specific needs. We understand that every reclamation project is unique and each customer has a different objective. Paul says he appreciates this about Millborn Seeds.

"They are willing to take the time and learn how we are different from their other customers - say Ducks Unlimited or a private landowner. We don't have the same objective, our needs are site specific as to the native species that we use," says Paul, who recently worked with Millborn Seeds when his firm designed Tetonka wetland bank. "They also have superb customer service. Jason will bring our order to Sioux Falls and deliver it to the contractor or us."

We take great pride in customer success. When our customers' projects are successful, we know we're doing things right. If you have any questions or would like us to help you with your next reclamation project, please give me a call 888-498-7333, or e-mail mattf@millbornseeds.com.
